Bowls are measured by joint diameter and gender. 14mm male is by far the most common on modern water pipes; 18mm male turns up on larger beakers. If your bong has a removable downstem, the bowl goes into the downstem, not the pipe body — measure the downstem opening.
An easy check: a 14mm joint is roughly the width of a pencil; an 18mm is closer to a AA battery. If you are unsure, take the old bowl with you or measure the outside diameter of the ground-glass section.
Standard funnel bowls are the default — simple, easy to clean, hard to get wrong. Screened or honeycomb bowls have holes in the base instead of a single hole, which stops material pulling through without needing a separate screen. Handle bowls (martini style) give you something to grip when the glass is hot.
An ash catcher sits between the bowl and the pipe and traps ash and resin before it reaches the main chamber. It keeps your water pipe clean for far longer and adds a little extra filtration. Match the joint size and angle (45° or 90°) to your piece.
Bowls clog faster than anything else on a pipe. Soak in isopropyl and coarse salt weekly and poke the hole clear with a paperclip. See also water pipes.
