The number tells you how many chambers the grinder has.
Teeth. Diamond-cut teeth in two staggered rows shred evenly; cheap pegged teeth tear and clog. Magnets. A strong magnetic lid keeps the grinder shut in a bag — the single most common complaint about budget grinders. Threading. Smooth, deep threads keep turning when the grinder is full; shallow threads bind and cross-thread. Material. Anodised aluminium is the sweet spot for strength and weight. Acrylic teeth break; wood looks good but absorbs moisture.
A 40–50mm grinder is pocketable and handles one or two sessions. 55–63mm is the standard desk size and grinds enough for a few joints at once. Anything larger is for prepping in bulk, not for carrying.
Fill to about two-thirds — an overpacked grinder jams and gives an uneven grind. Turn a few times, then flip the whole grinder upside down and turn again; gravity stops the finished material from being ground into dust. Dry material grinds cleanly; sticky material is easier if you chill the grinder for 20 minutes first. Once a month, tap out the kief with a scraper and wipe the teeth with an isopropyl-dampened cloth.
It collects the trichomes that fall through the screen. Sprinkle it over a bowl or press it.
