Torch, soft flame or jet?

A soft flame lighter is fine for papers and bowls. A jet flame burns hotter and far narrower, and it stays lit in wind — the reason people carry them outdoors. A torch is a larger, refillable jet with a bigger gas reservoir, made for dabs, cigars and anything a soft flame cannot reach.

Butane quality matters more than the torch

Cheap, unrefined butane leaves residue that clogs the jet, and a clogged jet is why most torches fail. Use butane refined to at least five times, and stick with one brand once the torch is working well.

Refilling and purging

Let the torch cool completely. Turn the gas dial to minimum. Hold it upside down, press the refill valve straight on with the can vertical, and fill in short bursts until gas spits back. Before the first fill of a new torch — and any time the flame sputters — purge the tank: press the valve with a small screwdriver until all the air hisses out. Air in the tank is the most common cause of a weak or yellow flame. Let a freshly filled torch sit for two or three minutes before lighting so the gas settles.

Safety

Never store a torch in direct sunlight or in a hot car. Keep the flame away from the body of the torch while adjusting. Check the child lock before it goes in a pocket.

Why will it not light after refilling?

Almost always trapped air. Purge it and refill.

Why is the flame yellow instead of blue?

Low-grade butane, a partly blocked jet, or air in the tank.
