Three things decide whether a pipe becomes your daily or ends up in a drawer: glass thickness, bowl size and the carb.
Spoon pipes are the default: a bowl, a stem, a carb, and enough body to hold comfortably. Chillums and one-hitters are straight tubes with no carb — the smallest, most discreet option, and the easiest to pack for a single hit. Steamrollers are open at both ends and clear in one pull; they are the harshest of the three and best suited to experienced smokers.
Resin narrows the airflow and sours the taste long before a pipe looks dirty. Once a week, seal the pipe in a bag with 91% isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt, shake it, leave it 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with hot water and let it dry fully before the next use. A pipe cleaner or cotton bud clears the stem. Never put glass in a dishwasher, and never pour boiling water into a cold pipe — thermal shock cracks more pipes than drops do.
A grinder gives an even pack and a cleaner burn, an ashtray keeps the ash off the table, and a lighter that stays lit outdoors saves a lot of frustration. If you want smoother hits, step up to a bubbler or a water pipe.
