Size. A small tray (around 7 by 5 inches) fits a lap or a bedside table. A medium is the usual desk choice. A large tray has room for papers, a grinder, a jar and a lighter at the same time without anything crowding the rolling space.
Edges. Raised, rounded edges are the whole point — they catch loose material and let you sweep it back into a pile. A flat board with a lip is not a rolling tray.
Material. Metal trays are the standard: smooth, easy to wipe, and they will not warp. Wood looks better but is harder to clean. Trays with a magnetic lid keep everything contained when you are done.
Grind directly over the tray so nothing is lost. Keep the near edge clear as your rolling area and use the far corners for papers and tips. Tip the tray and use the rounded corner to funnel loose material back into a jar — that corner is why the shape is curved.
Wipe metal trays with an isopropyl-dampened cloth; resin comes off easily before it hardens. Avoid abrasive pads on printed trays or you will scrub the design off. Wood trays should be wiped dry, never soaked.
A grinder, papers and tips, and an ashtray completes the setup.
