Why storage matters

Flower degrades through three things: light, air and heat. An airtight, opaque container in a cool cupboard keeps material fresh for months; a plastic bag on a windowsill dries it out in a fortnight and strips the terpenes that give it any smell.

Types of storage

  • Vacuum jars pull the air out, which is the closest you get to proper preservation. Best for anything you are keeping more than a few weeks.
  • Airtight glass jars are the practical default — a good seal, no plastic taste, and easy to clean.
  • Doob tubes are single-joint carriers: airtight, crush-proof and pocket-sized.
  • Stash boxes keep everything — grinder, papers, tray, jar — in one place rather than scattered across a drawer.

Smell control

An airtight seal does most of the work. Silicone or rubber gaskets outperform a plain screw lid, and a jar that seals properly makes the difference between a cupboard that smells and one that does not. Pair with a smoke odour candle or air filter if the room is the problem rather than the container.

Humidity

Too dry and material turns to dust; too damp and it can develop mould. Around 59–62% relative humidity is the target, which a two-way humidity pack inside a sealed jar will hold for a couple of months.
