Material. Rice papers are the thinnest and slowest burning, with almost no taste of their own — but they are the hardest to roll. Hemp papers are slightly thicker, grippier and far more forgiving, which makes them the best all-rounder. Wood pulp burns fastest and tastes most noticeable. Unbleached papers skip the chlorine whitening step.
Size. 1 1/4 is the standard single size. King size and king slim are for sharing or for a longer smoke. Single wide is smaller than 1 1/4 and now fairly rare.
Pre-rolled cones come with the tip already in place — fill, tap down, twist the end. They are quicker, more consistent, and a much lower barrier if you have never rolled by hand. Flat papers cost less per unit, pack down denser, and let you control the shape. Most people keep both.
A filter tip does three jobs: it stops material pulling through, keeps the end from getting soggy, and holds the shape while you roll. Pre-rolled tips save a step. Hemp wraps are a tobacco-free alternative to blunt wraps, with a slower burn and a heavier body than papers.
Grind evenly with a grinder — stems and chunks cause runs and canoeing. Work over a rolling tray so nothing is lost. Distribute the material along the paper rather than heaping it in the middle, tuck the edge in tightly before you lick, and pack the end down with a pen or a packing tool. Store papers sealed and away from heat so they stay pliable.
